Abrasive holders and accessories include abrasive holders, back-up pads, mandrels, contact wheels, polishing naps and other abrasive accessories that are used to apply abrasive products. They include abrasive blocks, abrasive laps, abrasive mandrels, bent mandrels, lapping plates, diamond rolls, diamond grinding pads, and diamond grinding tools. Lapping plates, lapping supplies, and lapping tools are also abrasive holders and accessories.

Abrasive sheets, rolls and hand pads are abrasive holders and accessories that consist of abrasive grains applied to a die cut square or rectangular surface with a backing made of cloth, fiber, film, paper, non-woven, or other backing. Some abrasive, grinding and finishing accessories are designed for use on bench or back stand grinders, while others are designed for use on portable or handheld grinders or sanders. Bonded abrasives, which include grinding wheels, use abrasive grains held together in a matrix of glass, resin, rubber, or other binders. Coated abrasive, grinding and finishing accessories consist of an abrasive grain layer adhesively bonded to the surface of a cloth belt, fiber disc, plastic film, paper sheet, or other backing.

Cloth backing is used with abrasive holders and accessories designed for aggressive applications such as abrasive planing. Fiber backing is denser than cloth and contains vulcanized or chemically treated cotton or cellulose fibers; however, fiber may curl under humid conditions. Film backing for abrasive, grinding and finishing accessories uses abrasive grains on plastic film, while foam and sponge backing uses abrasive grains bonded onto a foam layer, sponge, felt or other soft, resilient materials. Similarly, abrasive, grinding and finishing accessories with metal backing uses abrasive grains bonded onto a metal backing such as aluminum or brass. Other types of abrasive holders and accessories include paper, screen backed abrasives, non-woven, or aggregate materials.

Abrasive holders and accessories are used in wet and dry grinding, sanding, cleaning, polishing, lapping, and surface preparation in a variety of industries, including metalworking, woodworking, ceramics, and semiconductors. Abrasives and abrasive products are also used to sharpen tools, cut optical components, and finish concrete.
